NKT runs its high-voltage power cable factories on renewable energy

Dec 4, 2019

The NKT factory in Cologne, Germany, is now powered by electricity from renewable energy sources and joins the high-voltage factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, as a green manufacturing site. With both factories running solely on renewable electricity, NKT takes significant step to meet the increasing market demands for low-emission high-voltage power cable solutions.

The development of the global power grids is crucial to ensure the transition to renewable energy and as a leading provider of high-voltage power cable solutions, NKT now takes another step to reduce the carbon footprint of its high-voltage portfolio. This is done by having the high-voltage factory in Cologne, Germany, powered by green power alongside the sister factory in Karlskrona, Sweden. With the move to green power in Cologne, NKT reduces its companywide carbon footprint from electricity with 10%. - This step is a milestone in our ambition to reduce the carbon footprint of our power cable solutions, and I am pleased that both our high-voltage manufacturing sites now run on green power. The move enables us to minimize our environmental impact and offer high-voltage power cable solutions with one of the lowest carbon footprints in the market, says Alexander Kara, President and CEO of NKT.
The change in energy supply has been made possible by entering an agreement with the local utility verifying that the power supply originates from renewable energy.
Growing focus on sustainable power cable solutions
For NKT, the focus on minimizing the environmental impact of its operations is a natural part of being at the centre of the transition to renewable energy. As a key provider of the power cables needed for the development of the global power grids, NKT experiences a growing focus on sustainability across the industry.
 - The infrastructure of our power transmission is under constant development and we believe that the demand for low-emission power cables are becoming a key differentiator in the market. We are constantly working to reduce the carbon footprint of our power cable solutions during the entire life cycle and with our high-voltage factories now being powered by renewables, we take a big step supporting our customers’ ambition and are acting to reduce our environmental footprint, states Alexander Kara.
For NKT, the move to green power on the factories is part of a series of dedicated initiatives aiming to reduce the CO2 footprint of the high-voltage power cables contributing to the global energy transformation. Other initiatives include recycling of materials such as XLPE and metals from both production and decommissioned power cables as well as leveraging its local production for nearby markets reducing the CO2 impact form the company’s logistics. Furthermore, NKT owns and operates NKT Victoria, which is the most energy efficient cable laying vessel in the industry.
